I just learnt about a new meaning of the trigram REM at my friend blog:

REM to me was always associated to Losing my Religion, or the rapid eye moment that comes with the ensuing melancholic dancing moves. Well, it seems that the third meaning of the trigram also describes a rather dramatic human trait - Retrospective Excuse Mgmt - or the neocortex trying to justify what your gut drove you to.
While parsing through 'competing on analytics' - a seminal business book praising fact-based and data-driven decision making in organisations - I fished up a reference of a book quite claiming the opposite: that gut feeling works. Title of the book is Blink pasted hereunder. I want to add it to my reading list, but boy, I am lagging 12 books behind schedule. Alas, today it is mowing-the-lawn and cleaning-the-house- time (..). And this is not a decision based on instinct (except perhaps the instinct to preserve domestic peace) :-)
