What on Earth got into the head of the technocrate, spartan commander of the US troops in Afghanistan to openly bash the Obama adminstration (and an apparent pain in the *ss ambassador) in a glossy magazine ?

It is clear that Obama wanted to demonstrates his authority and prove his relentless consistency in maintaining a spotless image. Obama's decision to oust the brilliant general is said not to be due to 'any sense of personal insult', but in line with his principles to hold his administration fully accountable for each of their actions.

It is said that McChrytal - known for being a hyper-disciplined intellectual (even for army standards) - 'unwinded' in an Irish pub in Paris with his team in the presence of a reporter. The rest is a Rolling Stone.

I hate to see that it is the power of perception and today's media that toppled a man whose integrity, persistence, intellect and out-of-the-box approach was exactly what the US needed in a complex hornet's nest like Afghanstan. Spartan hero slipped on a banana peel.
