Reading 101

I am learning to read. Or more precisely, to read deeply. That might come to a surprise to some, but there has always a big gap between what I _wanted_ to read and what I really did.

At the university I postponed studying till April, finding myself diving in the course material in the 3+2 months that followed. When push came to shove however, I always enjoyed it, but each September my Party-ego took over my Study-ego.

During my PhD, I printed forests of scientific material related to data mining, bioinformatics and statistics - only to be confronted with the growing frustration that I didn't have to time to read them all. Let alone to process and remember it. We had a colleague back then - Jos - who's a statistician with a photographic memory (and he was far from a nerd !), boy did we envy that guy..

The Kindle I got last november re-ignited my Study-ego and the device removed the embargo for new books at home (set for lack of space).
So, once more, forests of knowledge are awaiting me to process. And therefore.. I am learning to read... to plan what to read, to take time for digesting the content (which is one of the reasons why I started blogging as well), and to teach myself the art of "deep reading".

Because I do believe that Google is making us stupid.
Check out what Nicholas Carr has to say about it:

Which explains my wish list for 2010 displayed as a book carrousel on the right..
