Here's another one for my personal records: Jan De Nul, CEO of the world largest, privately owned dredging group (here) . An acquaintance of ours works for 'Jappie' around the globe as a dredging engineer/project manager and comes back each 6 months with another round of exciting new stories.
The company generating a million dollar cashflow a day (sic!), is still managed tighty by a no-nonse guy, with refreshing, pragmatic views:
"A direct competitor warned me of his mastery of chess during a joint project. I am more of into a game of draughts ('dammen'). A chess player thinks a lot ahead and gets stuck when the game doesn't pan out as he planned it. In draughts, the game moves faster and is more based on gut feeling... By the way, 6 months later, we pulled a nasty trick on our dear chess player (grin)".
Schaken of dammen ? Think first, then act OR Act first, think later ? Cartesian or Empirical ? Reflective or hands-on ?
With these free associations I am (b)logging out..
